An Aztec tower of human skulls was found in 2015 during the restoration of a building in Mexico City. By 2017, archaeologists had found 676 skulls and so far a further 119 skulls had been uncover. The site is located next to the Metropolitan Cathedral, which was built over one of the most importante Aztec temples, the Templo Mayor. This is one of the main temples of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan.
Believed to be the heads of defeated warriors, archaeologists were expecting to find young men, however they were surprised when they started to uncover skulls of women and children among the young men. This dicovery raised questions about human sacrifice in the Aztec Empire, since this tower is believed to be part of a skull rack from the templo to the Aztec god of the sun, war and human sacrifice.
